You didn’t have to be a train fanatic to enjoy the behind-the-scenes tour of the Power Signal Box (PSB) at Peterborough on 18th May. The PSB is the location from which all the trains into and out of Peterborough are controlled.
13 members and friends were first shown the simulator on which signals operators can work through different scenarios. The basics of train signalling were explained to us and we had a chance to route trains for ourselves before being taken up to the signalling room itself.
The earlier explanation on the simulator helped us understand the complexities of the system on which trains are controlled from Kings Cross in the south to Grantham in the north.
Thanks go to branch vice-chair Lawrence Wright for organising a fascinating and entertaining evening.
